The Lewis and Clark National Forest is a 1.8-million-acre expanse of land, that ranges in land type from plains to forest to the towering peaks of the Rocky Mountains. The forest, named after the explorers who passed through the region, was created in 1897, making it one of the oldest national forests in the country. It is located in the north central portion of the state and is bordered by the Rocky Mountains in the west.
